Here’s some background for those who don’t know what I’m talking about: the LDS Linker plugin for WordPress changes any Latter-day Saint scripture reference in a blog post into a hyperlink pointing to the appropriate passage in the Internet Edition of the LDS Scriptures. It recognizes references whether the book name is written out or shortened using the standard abbreviations.

Here are some examples:

Moro 10:3–5 is a scripture mastery verse. Other scripture mastery verses include Mosiah 4:30, D&C 130:22–23, and JS-H 1:15–20. I have Articles of Faith 1:1–13 memorized—how ’bout you?

Version 2.0 is a nearly complete rewrite of the plugin. The generated links now point directly to the referenced passage rather than performing a passage search. I also found and squashed a bunch of bugs.

Version 1.2.1 stopped working a few months ago when the LDS church made significant changes to the way search queries are performed against their scripture system. Version 1.3 attempts to address that issue but probably doesn’t go far enough. I’m aware that D&C references are broken in this version (because the & symbol isn’t being encoded properly before being passed to scriptures.lds.org). I’m sure there are other issues I’m not aware of, so please let me know if you find anything fishy. I plan to rework the whole system soon so it links directly to passages instead of to search queries (i.e. Moro. 10:3-5 instead of Moro. 10:3-5).

Version 1.4 comes hot on the heels of 1.3 and fixes the Doctrine and Covenants links issue. I found that using the urlencode() function around the book name tamed that pesky ampersand into submission and thus restored the Doctrine and Covenants to the list of books LDS Linker can handle.

This should be the last update for a while. I was able to reproduce the problem with D&C references on a fresh WordPress install, and found that & is another valid way to write &. My code wasn’t catching that. I’ve also tested the plugin using several different fancy markup plugins. Things seem to be running smoothly in every configuration I have tested.

Software is bound to have bugs, and my code is no exception (in fact, it’s probably buggier than most). After seeing my plugin in action on a few blogs, I noticed some D&C references weren’t getting linked.

It seems that, by default, WordPress encodes ampersands with the & entity rather than the & entity I was expecting. My Textile 2 plugin uses &, so the problem never came up in my testing.

The idea did not originate with me, of course. I’ve borrowed heavily from the excellent Scripturizer plugin developed by Scott Yang. I’ve been using that since the inception of this blog because I really like Bible Gateway.

For Standard Works references, I’ve previously used Eric James Stone’s Scripture Linker plugin for Movable Type. That was one of the few plugins I was sad to leave behind when I made the switch to WordPress. Since the transition, I’ve tried using John Hesch’s LDS Scripturize plugin, but found it lacking in features (notably, support for D&C references).

This new plugin recognizes any reference to the LDS standard works, whether the book name is written out or shortened using the standard abbreviations. Here are some examples:

I hope this new plugin will find use on many LDS blogs. I’m sure some will hesitate to install it on account it was developed by a non-Mormon (many might call me “anti-Mormon”). Please understand I developed it so my readers can go to the LDS scriptures and see for themselves if what I’m saying is accurate.

Having been LDS once, I understand how it feels to be misrepresented. I now disagree with Mormonism’s major tenets, but I hope it is never said that I have not tried to understand and portray them as fairly as possible. Whether you believe they are inspired or not, you’ll surely agree that no one will ever learn anything about the LDS Standard Works without reading them.

As should be obvious, I welcome any feedback on the plugin.
